Construction waste consists of unwanted material produced directly or incidentally by the construction industry. This includes materials that may contain lead, asbestos or other hazardous materials. There is increasing pressure on the construction industry to dispose of this hazardous material in an environmentally responsible manner. Tetronics can help alleviate this pressure by providing waste recovery plants to deal with all types of hazardous wastes generated from a construction projects lifespan: from land remediation through to the treatment of APCs from incineration as well as the treatment of asbestos.
Fly Ash & APC residues from incinerators
Ash from the pollution filter systems of construction incinerators known as 'fly ash' is classified as hazardous waste and must be disposed of in specific landfill sites. This fly ash is subject to Air Pollution Control as it is contaminated with extremely high concentrations of heavy metals and toxic compounds like dioxins, linked to cancer and other health problems. Tetronics offers value‐generating waste recovery plants for the construction industry, by turning the hazardous fly ash into an inert building aggregate that the industry can reuse. Heterogeneous soil contamination is caused by the presence of man-made chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment and includes Persistent, Bio‐accumulative, and Toxic (PBT) pollutants organics such as Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), inorganic contaminates like asbestos containing materials and metallic pollutants like hexavalent chromium. This type of contamination typically arises from industrial or municipal activities and events such as the rupture of underground storage tanks, application of pesticides, percolation of contaminated surface water, oil and fuel dumping, leaching of wastes from landfills or direct discharge of industrial wastes to the soil. This occurrence of this phenomenon is correlated with the degree of industrialisation and intensities of chemical usage. Tetronics treats these contaminated waste materials so that the pollutant is destroyed and the bulk material mass is recovered for reuse at the same location, i.e. back‐fill for land remediation. Asbestos Containing Materials
Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) and Refractory Ceramic Fibres (RCFs) are toxic and when inhaled can cause serious illnesses, including lung cancer, and asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis). Since the mid‐1980s, use of Asbestos has been banned and in most territories its use is strictly prohibited and the subject of specific regulation. Unfortunately, due to its use among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century asbestos is now a ubiquitous problem. The resistance to heat and chemical damage in raw and cemented product form make this type of toxic materials waste disposal very challenging. The treatment of asbestos using Tetronics’ technology offers a commercially advantageous solution that can turn the hazardous material into an inert building aggregate. To find out how, click here.
